Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies – Season One [2023] on Paramount+

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies is clearly trying to modernize the original movie while acting as a prequel. Is it fun? Yes. Does it work? Mostly.

To be honest, I don’t remember much of the original movie. But I do know that I’m not a huge fan. As I result, I was skeptical. However, by the end of it, I had fun watching it.

In fact, nobody can deny how good-looking a show it is. But nobody can also deny that the show needs some work. The songs are okay, and the script is trying to do too much.

I understand that the original movie is considered problematic in this era and the show is trying to fix some of its problems, but that results in a lot of muddled messages. Instead of worrying about one or two issues each episode, the show overextends itself while trying to do everything in every single scene.

Yes, the show’s main audience is not a 30+ year old man, but I liked it 🤷🏻‍♂️. Campy? Yes. But in a way that feels more deliberate and pessimistic. But, like, in a super peppy way. And as the Pink Ladies would say: Worry less about what people think and do it in style.

Should you watch it?

Rise of the Pink Ladies isn’t quite automatic, systematic, or hydromantic with its catalogue of passable songs, but the core cast is plucky enough that nostalgic viewers will want it to tell them more, tell them more.

Where can I watch it?

You can stream Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies exclusively on Paramount+.
